They're just embryonic chickens... It's not like we're Christopher Reeve, eating embronic humans.

not the unfertilized ones; the eggs you buy in the store are sterile. i thought that hens laid eggs regardless of whether or not the rooster had plowed them.

They're just embryonic chickens... It's not like we're Christopher Reeve, eating embronic humans. roflmao yes you all make good points, and abstaining from eggs is a fairly tricky business too, i wouldn't exactly blame any vegetarian for not having the fortitude to do it. permit me a soapbox briefly. people that do so are ovo-vegetarians, same as people who eat fish or chicken or non-vegetarians. the true definition (i couldn't care less what your dictionary says) is that of a lacto-vegetarian (like me), but if you ditch the dairy and honey you can call yourself a vegan. vegetarianism is childs play compared to veganism. vegans are truly dedicated. sterile eggs aren't so much an animal as an animal product, like delicious honey and delicious milk. there are still two reasons not to eat them. for starters, nutritionally they are like meat without all the sinew, so if you eat alot of eggs you may aswell just eat everything. either way you expose yourself to a richness of protein, cholesterol, chance of food poisoning and sometimes toxins which travel up the food chain. reason B is that animals suffer to make those eggs, don't kid yourself otherwise. the same applies to dairy in most cases, and i don't kid myself about it. once dairy cows are "used up", most farms will have them slaughtered. reason C is that you "cast your dollar vote" in favour of usually heinous industries. they have been known to treat their workers almost as badly as they treat the animals. execution, and daily existence, by the way, is not "cruelty free". i could send you some footage that would make you squirm in your seat if you could make yourself watch it, and it is not a case of rare mistreatment, it is just a well hidden fact. reason D, my personal reason, i can only guess applies to eggs aswell. it may not. meat is an environmental catastrophe!!! don't get me wrong, so is broadacre cropping. i'm against it too. bring on the small-scale, sustainable farming ethics. that my friends is where our safe future lies. producing one ton of protein by grazing animals takes about 10 times the land required to produce it with plants. food production in general is a fucking catastrophe. early last century the united states suffered massive loss of topsoil. the government mustered everyone up and built some gigantic swales to begin restoring areas of land that were left bare by irresponsible farming and soil cultivation. it's good that they did that, but you still lost a whole lot of topsoil there. the destruction of the amazon rainforest continues. rainforest land, once stripped, is good for three seasons of irresponsible grazing AT BEST. then it goes to shit. their are economical reasons too. virtually all western governments practise subsidising. i won't delve into this because i couldn't give two shits about our economical wellbeing really, when my children (HAH! other peoples children) are going to live in the shitsville that we leave for them. sorry about that rant guys but you all opened your mouthes and asked for it.

(if you dont want to read this, just read the large paragraph - it is an incredible story)
i only just learned this. today the radio said that somebody created a rice variety voted "most tasty". it has already disappeared.
incredible and true story: during Stalins reign, some russian scientist started figuring out all of this stuff about crop genetics and their importance. he started collecting, documenting and hording all of these varieties of grain seeds and whatever. some asshole in stalins ear told him that there were easier ways to improve field production, just put the seeds in cold water he said, then the plants will be resistant to cold. this is nonsense of course, it comes down to the genetics. well, our friendly scientist was imprisoned, tortured and sentenced to death. his sentence was later lifted but he starved to death in prison. there was a powerful famine in russia during wwii and the seed-collecting organisation he created was in possession of vast piles of grains etc, classified according to variety. all nine scientists kept them hidden and starved to death along with their families, with piles of food in front of their very noses.
they saw their mission for its utmost importance, but our careless modern agriculture has already let so many varieties go extinct... bio-diversity is such an important thing for our future, but farmers just plant monocultures.
with modern agriculture farmers use varieties that keep well, ship well, sell well. we are losing all of the crop varieties from the time of ancient (and recent) crop domestication!!! this is bad, because in years to come we will need those drought proof and pest resistant varieties, and everything else... we need as much in our arsenal as possible.
well, the seed savers network has been going for around 15 years so hopefully the problem isn't as bad, but it still sucks, and GM varieties are making it worse. not sustainable or wise IMHO
you see those aerial photos of all the neat fields, and it looks orderly to your eyes.
what you should see is chaos.. a system intentionally thrown so far out of balance that we shouldn't be calling ourselves intelligent apes. a system so inefficient it relies on government subsidies to continue. YOU, the TAXPAYER, are buying that farmers petrol and his massive machinery so that he can wreck your planet. it may seem exagerated but i'm somewhat informed on the issue. farming is probably australia's biggest ecological mistake. we have hardly any soil in australia and it is degrading our soils. it's a dry land and farming ruins our rivers, causes algal blooms, sucks the river dry. we have the largest coral reef in the world and it is going to be dead in 50 years at best.
