I've read some of Hawking's work for the GUT, really interesting problem, the solution will be shattering. Probably open up whole new areas of science and technology virtually overnight. I plan to take the day off when they figure it out. Hope Hawking gets there first, that's pretty much what he's been working for all his life.

I honestly don't know if they will find it any time soon. I hope so, but i just think it is outside the realm of our understanding at this point.

Wait that is ALOT to read. Even for me.
What is this whole thing? Some one paraphrase it for me. And if you can't, then just tell me to read it all.

Someone correct me here.
Einstein came up with the Theory Of Relativity, telling us how the universe works pretty accurately, atleast when it comes to really big things.
Then there is something called Quantum Mechanics, which tells us how really small things in the universe work.
The two theories are proven and correct, but for some reason, they don't mesh. Einstein's calculations are perfect for bigstuff, but when you get down to the atomic level, they just go all wrong.
Basically, I think, with big stuff, gravity is boss, and electromagnetism is almost unmeasurable it effects things so little. But with little stuff, gravity has little effect and it's all electromagnetism.
So anyway, the two theories aren't easily reconcilable, they sorta contradict and our predictions on how things should work are thrown off.
If we ever find a Grand Unified Theory that puts these two together and makes sense, we should be able to predict everything that's going to happen in the future of the universe, including will it expand forever and get so cold that everything dies, or will it stop expanding and being to come back together, burning everything up? Should answer questions about time travel and for sure high speed space travel and such.
I might be way off, but thats the way I remember it and i'm pretty sure that's the jist, read more about it on your own if you're interested. I recommend Hawkings The Theory Of Everything.

it's a google search away but basically it's a theory that everything is made up of tiny vibrating strings, on the quantum level. it's a theory of quantum gravity. it's not proven by a long shot, the strings would be too small to see with current particle physics technology. they are working on other ways though. however it's a THEORY and not a proven fact. but it is a very interesting subject. brian greene's "the elegant universe" is a good book about it even if it is a bit out dated.

Say this blanket represents all the matter and energy in the universe, okay?
You, me, everything.
Nothing has been left out, all right? All the particles, everything.
- What's outside this blanket? - More blankets. That's the point. - Blanket's everything. - Exactly. This is everything.
Let's just say that this is me, all right?
And I'm, what, 60-odd years old and I'm wearing a gray suit.
Blah, blah, blah. And let's say over here, this is you.
And, you're... I don't know, you're 21. You got dark hair, etc.
And over here, this is Vivian, my wife and colleague.
Then over here, this is the Eiffel tower, right? It's Paris.
And this is a war. And this is, uh, a museum.
And this is a disease. And this is an orgasm.
And this is a hamburger.
- Everything is the same even if it's different. - Exactly.
But our everyday mind forgets this. We think everything is separate.
Limited. I'm over here. You're over there. Which is true.
But it's not the whole truth because we're all connected.
Because we... are connected.
