Its obvious that everyone of us has taken a path in life. more than likely only a handful of us will read this or reply. But to see how each of us has evolved let it be known!
I've been working in a kitchen for 2 years 9 months...fine dining and learning the ropes...I still sit in the pantry station after working my way up through the dish pit and prep operations. I should get a slight promotion to grill soon which will take me from $9.50 to ethier $11 or $12, still working full time. My biggest learning experience has been the word stress taking on new meaning and accountability. Having someone putting you down and insulting your intellect on a consistent basis is not fun in the least bit. Knowing you satisfied someone with something you created is. I'm far from a chef but have learned what it takes to get you to that point. Checks and balances you could say. One thing that should be acknowledged is that before this job, you could not get me near anything hot, I never cooked for myself....EVER.
So that's where my career may be if I can't continue music as a career.

That's pretty cool, except for the whole putting down/insulting bit...
Cooking is still something I'm not terribly comfortable with, but when you've only got one person to feed... and it's yourself... it's kind of weird. I make something, and there is simply no physical way of making a single serving.
Anyway, I will reply with what I'm doing.
Currently I am (still) working for Hilton Reservations call center, here in Hemet, California. I started in July of 2005, so I've been working here 3 years and 11 months. I started taking phone calls, but I've been in the IT department for the largest majority of the time I've been working here. (Since Oct. of '06) I started out making something like $8.75, but right now I make $12.05 or so per hour. There isn't really any opportunity for advancement, so I'm kind of just doing this to pay the bills. I'm going to school full time right now in order to try get myself into a position that I might apply for MIT. So I'm working, taking overtime at every opportunity, and schooling. It's been kind of hectic, but I can only see good things coming from here.
The type of work I do now, however, is all help-desk stuff. I fix broken things, I help people with issues they're having, I break/repair computer systems, do a lot of reporting, etc. It's not a bad job, but like I said... The ceiling is pretty short. The other downer is that they're talking about removing the position that I have. Which would mean I go back to taking phone calls all day every day. Which isn't a problem, I'd end up making more money... (The incentive program for sales + the opportunity to make up to $1400 extra per year based on performance would set me a bit above what I make now)
That's all I got.

I've learned within my job that there is no "real" level of advancement as far as title, money will go up in a way (I'll never make more than $12/hr) but in the simplest terms refering to what you said about going to school at the same time and wanting to go to MIT (Which is an awesome thing) basically I am in school but getting paid for it. haha
I never planned on ending up in the job I'm in, I just needed a job and all I wanted to do was play music. My friend Will called me in to wash dishes oneday, its amazing because before that point almost 3 years ago you basically had to pull my teeth to get me near an oven. We leave our oven at 500 and during service! Yet at the end of the day, this way the last thing I wanted to do or wanted to do, but now, over time I've found that I enjoy it.
I over heard chef (melody: 25 years of age) telling the new guy that I do this is, is a job to me...this was today, I didn't say that I heard her but, its not just a job to me, its something I'm proud of.
But basically I'm drunk I want to talk about your stuff, I just had to rant about that last comment I made because no one knows that I have a passion towards it.
So I'll hit this back tomorrow !

Well, I gotta say, it's not that I expected any sort of upward movement, it's quite simply that with the level of responsibility that I've taken on, I tend to get really frustrated at the severe lack of compensation. I enjoy my job, but I've taken on more responsibility than my superior on more than one occasion, and he still gets paid twice what I make. Being paid to school, though, is a very awesome thing. You're being trained on all the stuff you're planning on using for the future, and getting paid... it does seem like you've got a nice road laid ahead, I must say. I don't know about the whole enjoying the job thing. I've discussed this with my cohort a few times, how even though we're both quite competent computer-people, it's never been the sort of job we were looking to get into. It just happened this way. And I don't hate the job, not by any means. But it's still not something I enjoy enough to say I want to do it for the rest of my life. And so perhaps a job that I wasn't so familiar with, something that brought me out of my comfort zone might be something I'd enjoy doing much more. But then, I wonder... Are you enjoying the job, or are you just enjoying the experiences you get working there? I mean, the work you do... is it THAT good? Is it THAT interesting? If you removed the people, and you were just doing what you do, would it be something you are so proud of? I'm not accusing or anything, I'm asking earnestly. Because I don't know that I would have that sort of satisfaction. And so I don't know what else to say. At this point I need to go get ready for work. I am glad you feel passionate, though, because passion/hope/desire is the only thing that makes life worth living. As soon as you lose that, you might as well be dead.

Hey! I'll join in! I finished university after 4 and a halkf years of hard work last December with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I have a job as a project manager (that's my official title) since the beginning of March. Right now, it isn't the most satisfying or motivating job, but considering the economy, I have a job. I won't talk about my salary online out in the open like this, but you can imagine that with a university it's a good salary. As for music, I'm in a band called Dark Century (check us out on myspace www.myspace.com/darkcentury). Fun times indeed. That sums it up I guess. Nice to hear from you guys.
